Driver Training School Operations

The SCDMV licenses private entities to provide driver training.

A driver training school is an entity in the business of training or educating people on how to drive motor vehicles and charges a fee for its services. Driver training schools must meet all requirements outlined in the Driver Training School Regulations.

Driver training schools must be licensed and approved by the SCDMV.

Classroom courses offered by state institutions; duly accredited and approved colleges, public, parochial, and private high schools where classroom driver education is part of the curriculum; or employers giving instruction to their licensed employees are exempt from licensing requirements. Courses offered to adults under adult education programs do not qualify for the exemption.
