Once you permanently move to South Carolina, you must apply to transfer your commercial driver's license (CDL) within 30 days. A commercial learner's permit (CLP) is not transferable to another state.

You must turn in your out-of-state CDL before receiving a CDL from this state. You must be 21 to drive outside of this state.

Transferring Your Out-of-State CDL

To transfer your out-of-state CDL to SC, all of the following are required:

• Complete the Application for a Commercial Driver's License or Learner's Permit (SCDMV From 447-CDL).
• Complete the Commercial Driver's License Holders Medical Certification (SCDMV DL-405A).
• Complete the Affidavit of Previous Driver's License (SCDMV Form DL-402).
• Provide documents such as your original birth certificate, social security number, and proof of SC address. A full list of accepted documents is found on the United States Citizens' Checklist (SCDMV Form MV-93).
• Provide the name of your liability insurance company licensed to do business in SC.
• Certify you've read, understand, and meet requirements under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations.
• Present your FMCSA medical qualification certificate, if applicable. This requirement is based on the type of commerce you selected on SCDMV Form DL-405A.
• Pass a vision test.
• Pay $25 for the license.
• Pay $15 for the application fee.

If you have a hazmat endorsement (H), you must pass the hazmat knowledge test and complete a check with the Transportation Security Administration.

If you've been convicted of an offense found in SC Code Section 23-3-460, you must register with the sheriff's office of the county you'll live in within three days of moving to the state.
